Marine SABRES Survey and Collaborative Workshops
In this latest issue of our 'Marine SABRES Insights' series, we catch up on our partner activities since February 2025!
Are You A Marine Manager? Then Marine SABRES Wants To Hear From You!
Our Marine SABRES colleague Gemma Smith (IECS and University of Hull) is currently conducting research on the challenges and priorities in marine management, so if you are a marine manager (i.e. someone who influences decisions on the marine environment), then your perspectives and input would be greatly appreciated!
As part of this research, Gemma has designed a multi-method study that aims to explore marine manager perspectives for shared understanding and communication of marine management issues and priorities, with an emphasis on ecosystem-based approaches, through the application of systems thinking fundamentals and tools.
This study is compiled of two parts:
1) A Q-study (approx. 10-15 minutes)
2) An expert panel session (two 2-hour online sessions)
Contributions will help to inform about the barriers to the uptake of Ecosystem-Based Management in marine social-ecological systems.

9th European Marine Board Forum
In April, the 9th European Marine Board (EMB) Forum on "Coastal and Water Resilience at the Land-Sea Interface" — an event supported by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and recognised as an action in support of the EU Mission: Restore our Ocean and Waters — took place in Brussels.
On this occasion, our Marine SABRES colleague Cassandra Tocco was invited to share some insights on land-sea interactions in European marine governance — a topic she explored in a recent scientific article published in the Environmental Science and Policy Journal, entitled 'Land-sea interactions in European marine governance: State of the art, challenges and recommendations'.
If you missed Cassandra's talk at this year's EMB Forum, you can watch it in the video linked above (Start Time: 01:08:05), or read more about the event here!
36th European Cetacean Society Conference
We are happy to announce that Marine SABRES along with representatives from the Blue Connect Project, participated in this year's '36th Cetacean Society Conference' by delivering a half-day workshop on the 'Macronesian Ecological Corridor'.
This event brought together 19 members of the scientific community with a particular focus on cetacean specialists, in an interactive and collaborative forum with the aim of developing a common framework for assessing and addressing key environmental challenges, knowledge gaps, and objectives essential for ensuring connectivity among the Macaronesian archipelagos.
Second Over-Arching Stakeholder Workshop
Both researchers and stakeholders from the Horizon Europe funded Marine SABRES and MARBEFES projects came together in April in Zandvoort, the Netherlands, for a joint, 2-day engagement workshop!
The workshop was conducted with a view to sharing an overview of results gathered from the second round of our stakeholder consultations, while facilitating feedback through round table discussions and paper-surveys during the day's proceedings.
Land-Sea Governance in Macaronesia Workshop
On 28th of March, a workshop organised by the University of Portsmouth, in collaboration with the University Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was held in Gran Canaria to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders across Macaronesia and support more effective land-sea governance.
To this end, the workshop brought together three EU-funded projects – BlueGreen Governance , IMPLACOST and Marine SABRES – to explore the challenges of coastal and land-sea management within the region’s institutional, political, social, and economic context, and to foster shared understanding across different perspectives.
Throughout the workshop, researchers, decision-makers and stakeholders worked jointly to; ask and answer key questions, examine available evidence, define informed outcomes, and reach shared conclusions. This collaborative process enabled participants to identify priority issues, reflect on current and emerging policy approaches, and consider the broader socio-political and institutional landscape in which coastal governance takes.
Sjókovin Celebrates 5 Years
Our project partner Sjókovin (Blue Resource) celebrated its 5th anniversary on the 28th of March and marked the occasion by hosting a conference which focused on fisheries and aquaculture in the Faroe Islands. The event featured presentations from a range of participants including our Marine SABRES colleague and manager of Sjókovan, Unn Laksá, and project researcher Mirjam Carlsdóttir Olsen.
We would like to congratulate our partners at Sjókovin on reaching this significant milestone and we wish them the very best in the years to come!
Macaronesia Documentary Trailer
As part of Marine SABRES and delivered through our research partners at LifeWatch ERIC, our project is working to develop and release a series of documentary shorts, showcasing initiatives that are working to secure marine biodiversity across our three main Research Areas.
One of these Research Areas is the Macaronesia region, in the NE Atlantic that includes the Azores, Madeira, and Canary archipelagos, but also the Cabo Verde islands. The activities of Marine SABRES will be conducted in the Macaronesia biogeographic region, excluding Cape Verde.
Watch LifeWatch ERIC's second documentary trailer presenting this area, and enjoy some of the stunning views of Macaronesia captured during their visit in the Gran Canaria site in May 2024!
